Thank you, news outlets

For telling me for the umpteenth time how the economy sucks and the job market is pretty much underwater. Thanks, thanks, I really needed that. CNN Money, you even interviewed a bunch of my fellow students on campus to let us know how screwed we are. This was just after a couple of long talks with my mentors and professors to not worry about it until time comes.

Everyone I’ve spoken to has told me to wait until late March or early April to start looking. That’s what I plan to do, but it’s hard to keep your heart rate down while others are getting called for second-round interviews now. Ideal plan: get an internship next semester at a publishing house that will hire me. Preferably an internship that isn’t editorial–I’d like to try publicity, sales or marketing. Perhaps I’ll ask the editors at RB if they have any of those positions–I like RB, and I’d like to work someplace that does thoughtful children’s and YA books like they do. Or, I could just ask the lovely hiring manager who contacted me about THIS internship…

Last week, I met someone in the finance dept at Random House, a friend of my mentor’s. (Different mentor this time, she’s a sales VP at Verizon). It was really nice—she teased me about not being fond of mainstream/commercial fiction (how she was able to tell, I don’t know! She asked me if I was a fan of Christopher Paolini or Dan Brown and I said not really.) She used to work closely with the RH Children’s Sales department, and it was quite a compliment to hear her say that she thought I would fit in there quite well… but then again, that was only from one evening.

I think my brain just exploded
